“Rich Young Ruler” Notes
Mark 10:17 up until this point in the gospel you've only got the beggars; you've only got the people who physically need healing. As you can tell this man has no apparent need for Jesus. I want you to get the importance of this, we will have times in our lives when we are the beggars we are the, lame, the blind, and the deaf.
Mark 10:18 You must figure out what you call Jesus Christ.
Lewis expressed his idea in more than one place, but the most definitive appears in Mere Christianity:
“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
Lunatic?
If I were to say 'I'm god' you wouldn't say that Daniel has some good things to say... no would probably say something like "that kid needed to wear a bike helmet as a kid."
Liar?
1. Jesus said He was sinless. (John 8:46) 2. Jesus said He could forgive sin. 3. Jesus told everyone to pray to him as God.
Jesus is saying so you understand that I'm God because you are calling me good.
Mark 10:19 The commandments that Jesus lists are on the second half of the commandments and I mean that in the way of this, the first five are about honoring God and the second five are about how to love your neighbor.
Jesus is basically going are you doing these things, he's just poking and counseling.
Mark 10:20 Guys is he not just like us I mean to put it into today’s perspective he's saying "I've been going to church, taking notes on the sermons, going to every bible study I can find, I've sang every worship song out there. But something is still wrong, what's going on?"
The man is saying, "Yes, I’ve been doing these things since I was thirteen years old and something is still wrong."
